3KCBWDAY1: Colour Lovers
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to my vacation from the move–and happily, when the third annual Knitting and Crochet Blog Week happened to fall!!! I can’t tell you how long I’ve been looking forward to this, and how scared I was that it would come at a bad time for me. But no! WOOHOO! So without further ado, the first post of the week! :D
“Colour is one of our greatest expressions of ourselves when we choose to knit or crochet, so how do you choose what colours you buy and crochet or knit with. Have a look through your stash and see if there is a predominance of one colour. Do the same with your finished projects – do they match? Do you love a rainbow of bright hues, or more subdued tones. How much attention do you pay to the original colour that a garment is knit in when you see a pattern? Tell readers about your love or confusion over colour.”
I should be embarrassed to admit I have absolutely no rhyme or reason to how I choose the colors in the yarn I buy (and I have only a tiny bit more rhyme or reason to the colors I use to dye my yarn with). It’s whatever happens to strike my fancy when I’m walking by a display.
I was eager to have a little look through my stash to see if I have a propensity toward one color, so I photographed one of the bins I recently organized:
Well, actually, one of several bins–but this one’s actually organized, and pretty, and makes me look a little bit less like the slob I actually am. ;)
As you can see, different colors. Hey, let’s have a quick look into my project bag that’s perched above the yarn bin there:
Lots more different colors. I suspect that I do lean toward a couple colors in my wanderings–blue, since I went and had myself a baby boy 40 months (and 2 days) ago, and greens. I adore purples and pinks but I always feel like I don’t have much of either of those colors in my stash (the Atomic Cotton Candy sock in the above photo, beside). In the recent past, I have made an effort to get more purple yarn (like the little bit appearing in the lower right portion of my project bag).
I just reviewed my Rav project page–my colors are somewhat varied there, too. The “predominance” of blues is because of that little boy of mine, again. (I bought baby yarn for a few projects and ended up using the leftovers in several other projects, as well.)
I think in terms of things like hues/chroma/ color saturation, I tend toward bright colors, jewel-tones, and pastels. (And that leaves. . . white and black out?) :p I like color. Lots of color. Most colors. Any colors. All sorts of combinations of colors. Even the wrong combinations. :D
As for using the example colors in a pattern photograph, I guess it depends on what the pattern is for. I only wear certain colors, but if I really like a certain pair of socks that was original knit in a color I wouldn’t wear, I’d quickly and easily substitute a different color yarn. If we’re talking about a toy or something, then I might be more inclined to use the colors that are in the sample photograph. Although, truth be told, I don’t think I’ve knit anything yet in the same color shown in the pattern’s sample photograph. Maybe I’ll change that one of these days.
Happy Knit and Crochet Blog Week #3, everyone! See you here tomorrow! :)
